Never heard of the ARB Off Road Icon’s project? Here is the story – To celebrate ARB’s 40th birthday, the ARB Off Road Icons project was launched. Fans in Australia were given the chance to vote for the 4 most iconic 4x4s in Australia. What were the results? The Toyota 40 Series Land Cruiser, Nissan GQ Patrol, 5th Gen Toyota HiLux and a Land Rover Defender.

After the vehicles were chosen by the voters, the marketing team set out to find the 4 iconic vehicles to purchase, restore and outfit them with the full ARB product line in preparation for touring the Australian 4×4 show circuit and lastly crossing the iconic Simpson Desert!

Of course the USA office didn’t want to be left out of the fun, so we opened up the polls in the USA for everyone to vote for their iconic 4×4. With the results in, the Jeep Wrangler TJ was the clear winner and we set out and purchased a red 2004 Jeep Wrangler TJ. The Wrangler will also be restored, outfitted and will attend 4×4 events around the USA and then shipped to Australia next spring to take part in the trip across the Simpson Desert with the 4 iconic vehicles of Australia.

The Jeep Wrangler is a compact SUV that was designed to uphold the historic legacy of the Jeep brand, while offering a fun, ‘go-anywhere’ vehicle that was well received by enthusiasts and the everyday public.

While Jeep Wranglers and their CJ predecessors never presumed to be luxury vehicles, the TJ generation was a big advancement with additions like coil sprung suspension, safety air bags and a redesigned interior that brought this 4×4 up to modern standards. The 4.0L was the most popular engine choice, having been used by Jeep from 1987 through to 2006, pushing out around 189 hp.

Changes to the TJ’s chassis, suspension and axles greatly improved the Wrangler’s off road capability. The solid front and rear axles, coupled with the highly articulating Quadra-Link suspension setup, allow these vehicles to flex and crawl over almost any obstacle.

ARB OME BP-51 High Performance Internal Bypass Shock Absorbers

Developed and tested extensively in some of Australia’s most rugged environments, these big bore, position sensitive bypass shock absorbers with remote reservoir are designed to be fitted without any need for vehicle modification. This design combines considerable ride comfort around town with significant amounts of end-zone damping for exceptional chassis control and handling off road. In addition to the velocity sensitive damping which used in most shock absorbers, where the faster the piston moves, the higher the level of damping is generated, BP-51 shock absorbers also generate damping dependent on the position of the piston within the shock absorber’s body via their internal bypass design.

ARB OME BP-51 High Performance Internal Bypass Shock Absorbers

This bypass design results in an ability for the shock absorber to provide the best of both worlds, a comfortable and compliant ride during normal driving and a more controlled ride over challenging terrain. With greater levels of damping generated at each end of the stroke, the piston slows as it approaches full compression and extension, preventing harsh topping out against the bump stop and allowing large bumps and corrugations to be easily absorbed.

Damping performance is easily adjustable across a wide range in both rebound and compression, allowing the user to alter the vehicle’s ride performance and cater for different road conditions and vehicle loading scenarios.

The body, reservoir and components are all made from aircraft grade (6061 T6) aluminum, with a type 3, 40 micron hard anodized finish, ensuring exceptional heat dissipation and resistance to corrosion and stone damage.

ARB OME BP-51 High Performance Internal Bypass Shock Absorbers

Designed, developed and tested entirely by ARB’s team of Old Man Emu Ride Engineers, all BP-51 shock absorbers are manufactured in-house by ARB. In order to achieve this, significant investment has been made in state of the art machinery and hard anodizing equipment, allowing ARB total control of the manufacturing process to ensure the highest possible quality.

Shock absorber and coil over assemblies will be competitively priced with vehicle specific fitting kits at an additional cost. These fitting kits will allow the mounting of the external reservoir in vehicle-specifc location, creating a clean and straightforward solution to a traditional challenge of other reservoir systems.

The coilover applications come pre-loaded with the appropriate coil spring and are adjusted to the proper height for vehicles equipped with a bumper and winch (heavy load). If a vehicle does not have additional weight on the front end, the preload on the springs can be adjusted to the appropriate levels. ARB recommends that this is done using the BP- 51 Spring Compressor Tool (VM80020001). Some applications will have side specific part numbers (left/right) due to the location of the external reservoir.

In North America, the initial applications of Jeep JK Wrangler, FJ Cruiser (2010-2014), Toyota 200 Series and HiLux 2005+ will be available late summer 2015 with other applications rolled out in the months following. Soon to be released applications will include the Toyota Tacoma, Toyota 4Runner (2010+), and Toyota FJ Cruiser (2007-2009).
